Children and adolescents often become locked into patterns of self-defeating behavior that are triggered by events they do not recognize. Adults can also become locked into reactive management methods that fail to fathom what elicits and perpetuates disruptive behavior. This article describes just such a problem: A girl is unknowingly "set up " by a manipulative peer who enjoys instigating such trouble without getting caught. To address the problems of both girls, the author needed to be able to diagnose and counteract this dynamic of negative peer influence.
