Children whose severe attachment problems arise from abuse and rejection pose major challenges to caregivers, teachers, and therapists. These youth avoid or rage at distrusted adults, sabotage relationships, and drive away the people most willing to try to help them. Although they respond poorly to traditional behavioral management strategies, these young people should not be viewed from an unduly pessimistic perspective. The authors describe a comprehensive treatment strategy designed to create positive bonds between adults and troubled children who carry the diagnosis of "reactive attachment disorder. "
