The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Amendments of 1997 mandated a shift away from reactive strategies toward proactive interventions with students who experience both disability and behavioral challenges. An Individualized Education Program must be specifically designed to provide positive behavior support. The foundation of this plan is a junctional assessment of behavior, a process of gathering data to determine the junction or purpose of behavior. However, IDEA 97 did not specify how this assessment is to be conducted. The author describes how the methodology of Life Space Crisis Intervention can provide another source of data for junctional assessment and positive behavior intervention.
