Within the adolescent population, there is a subgroup with specific features that hamper traditional efforts to retain them in school. This group, which has previously been termed "school phobic" or school refusal (Hersov, 1985), presents a significant challenge to professionals attempting to meet their educational, social, and emotional needs. This article describes a program at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario for students exhibiting symptoms of chronic school refusal.
