Behavior Management through Adventure (BMTA) works to create a healthy community, empowering young people to develop responsibility for self and others. It was initially developed by Project Adventure (PA) for a residential treatment program for court-involved youth. This model moves beyond immediate behavior control to foster social emotional learning. Over the past twenty years, the methodology has been extended to other alternative education and juvenile justice programs. This article explores the theory, practice, and evaluation of the model.
