Staub's perspective regarding development and encouragement of altruism is compared with existing information about school bullying. Specifically, suggestions for bullying intervention are culled from research on the development of altruism. Of specific importance is the stance taken by bystanders during bullying episodes; the degree to which a student is altruistic will, at least in part, predict whether that individual will intervene on behalf of the victim, choose to remain neutral, or actually assist the bully.
