The sense of shared responsibility for others has diminished in modern society. In their survey of contemporary values, Patterson and Kim (1991) reported that 81 % of adults expect public schools to teach morals to their children. Yet, two-thirds of those adults said they never donate time to community activities or to solving community problems, and one-quarter indicated they did not care about their neighborhood's problems. The researchers also reported that none of the sixth-grade children surveyed chose careers in the helping occupations. Still, these children voiced the concern that "America is going down...unless we do something...but they won't let us." (p. 219)
