The scope of violence in America's schools was reported by the National Institute of Education more than ten years ago. 282,000 secondary school students were physically attacked each month; 112,000 students were robbed through force or threats of force each month. Studies indicate that the situation may be worsening. Drugs and violence in schools have created a significant body of case law defining the conditions under which students may lawfully be searched and the rights to privacy which can be legitimately expected by students. This article examines the development and current status of the law regarding school searches with particular attention to handicapped students.
