Many adults believe that juvenile sexual offenders are devoid of the desire or capacity to develop the necessary understanding and values to keep them from reoffending. This pessimistic mind-set, shared by the public and many professionals, has led to a proliferation of highly intrusive and punitive interventions. The authors describe an alternative treatment model developed at Starr Commonwealth for sexually reactive and offending children and youth. The model's strength-based interventions have been shown to be effective in fostering positive connections to adults and peers and in breaking patterns of offending.
