In this interview, the author talks with influential educator Deborah Meier about her educational philosophy, especially as it relates to current school reform efforts that focus on standardized testing. Meier stresses that there is a big difference between standards and standardization, and that in fact, standardized testing is incapable of measuring the complex and subtle qualities that are required of both creative thinking and democratic participation. Furthermore, standardized tests inhibit the ability of local communities to set standards that reflect their particular definitions of what it means to be a well-educated person. Ms. Meier is a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and is currently principal at the Mission Hill School in Boston.
