With a growing understanding of the characteristics of girls in the justice system, it is now possible to tailor programming to the specific needs of this at-risk population. The author identifies a range of these specific needs, including the powerful role of relationships and mentoring for girls' healthy development, which has been strongly emphasized by research on the psychology of girls. Traditional approaches to delivering justice programs are challenged, and the author identifies a number of national model programs that are seeking to address these needs.
