The iceberg is one of my favorite analogies. It is a floating mountain in which seven-eighths of its mass is underwater. Psychologically, it highlights the difference between overt and covert behavior. What you see is not what you get. It demonstrates how the magnitude of the problem is out of sight; and, as the captain of the "indestructible" Titanic learned, it does not give you any advanced warning before you run into its hidden part.
