Among U. S. youth, self-perceptions of appearance are inextricably linked to one's level of self-esteem. Cultural and media messages tout appearance as essential to popularity and high self-esteem. Girls are particularly likely to suffer, given that they cannot meet the punishing standards or ideals of beauty being set today. This article discusses the gender differences in perceived physical appearance that contribute to problems such as depression and eating disorders. Ways to help children and adolescents reject media messages and base their self-esteem on genuine qualities are explored.
