The increase in violence and the erosion of values among many youth is related not only to emotional factors, but also to the lack of opportunities for religious and moral training. Research suggests that at-risk youth differ from more stable peers both in the maturity of their spiritual beliefs and in involvement in religious activities. The author, who is on the leadership staff of Boys Town, offers suggestions for fostering spiritual growth through skills and experiences that bring the religious behavior of at-risk youth closer to that of more stable peers.
